List and discuss at least three technical issues/challenges and at least three managerial
issues/challenges of cloud computing in business. Give some examples
Technical Issues
1. Security and Privacy
One of the most challenges businesses face when using cloud computing is the security
of their data. According to IBM DeveloperWorks.com. “Cloud computing introduces another
level of risk because essential services are often outsourced to a third party, making it harder to
maintain data integrity and privacy, support data and service availability, and demonstrate
compliance” As the cloud technology evolves, providers must assure continue improving
security and reduce data breaches and hacker attacks (Iyeer, 2012) Additionally, data security
and privacy does not only concern to hackers and breaches but issues with people who
manages those data as well, sometimes incidents like giving access to unintended third parties
can occur and, likewise, cause damages to the company.
Real world example: The Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS), a Cloud
computing applications aimed at commercial enterprises, reportedly was hit with a data breach
in 2010, and customers of the BPOS cloud service apparently could download information on
other customers of the suite. The technology giant said it resolved the issue within two hours of
its discovery, and only a few customers were involved (Banham, 2012). Dropbox, a giant cloud
provider email and password data for more than 68 million users were stolen and put for sale in
the darknet marketplace in 2012 (Turner, 2016) Security and privacy breaches are not a new
thing, cloud computing must provide improved security services that are better than traditional
databases. This is potentially a asset to customers who are always looking for better way to
protect its data.

Managerial Issues
1. Lack of Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
One of the issues that companies are having with implementing cloud computing is
the fact that they do not have the necessary tools or resources, nor they have qualified staff
that know how the cloud works. Educating staff about new processes and tool sets, or
hiring staff with new skills, are a must for companies in order to be able to take fully
advantage of cloud computing. Most employees are not acting maliciously, but their
carelessness can be just as damaging as if they were. According to Heath Davies, CEO at
Clearswift. “Companies need to wake up to the fact that employees have the potential to
cause the company huge damage through their actions, and ensure that training, policies,
and cloud technology are in place to minimize that risk” (Scase, 2016) Managers must pay
be aware that critical information needs to be governed at the highest levels or it could
jeopardize the future of a company.
