Summary
In John McWhorter’s talk, “Texting Is Killing Language. JK!!!”, he thought that,
texting actually is evidence of a balancing act that young people are using today and
the developing writing skills. It is an expansion of their linguistic repertoire. He
showed how the language developed and how the writing developed. Meanwhile they
were compared that texting is not writing and is a new type of language. The language
has existed much longer than writing. Texting is “fingered speech” and do not thing of
capitalization and punctuation. He gave some interesting facts to persuade his
audiences. He believes that texting will continue to develop in the future.
Strong response description
Does the texting come to an end on behalf of writing skills? John McWhorter
argues that texting is beyond our imagination – whether linguistic or cultural – and that
the texting is good for us. I totally agree with him.
Texting is one of language called “fingered speech”. It is not writing. Speech is
much looser and telegraphic than writing. When people talking, they will never thing
about capitalization and punctuation. If you talk to somebody like writing, the
communication will be limited. The speech is existed early than writing. The writing
comes along as a kind of artifice.
Second, texting is a new kind of language and new structure. His example is LOL.
We often used it in our daily life. I usually texted to my friend with LOL. It
represented our feelings. The general meaning of LOL is “laughing out loud”.
However, we used it in different situation. It maybe represents amazed, astonishment,
or crazed. He gave another example is “slash”. Haha, we always used it too. Yes, we
used it when we want to change the topic. The texting is developing this words and
meaning.
The speech, the new language such as texting is still developing. We compared
with past people that they never know we will talk like this. But if we put they in here,
they still can understand it. We still can image in the future. Young people will
develop many new and interesting words. Even though, there are not structure and
rules like writing. However, our young people still can spell and punctuate on writing
papers. I agree with it. Even I used phone texting to my friends and family, I never
thought my writing was developing or reversing.
Conclusion, texting is a new type of speech and still developing now. It
represented that the language had developed and still developing. This is good news. I
very agreed with him.
